Forget all that other stuff

Talk media with people who aren't in the media, and you'll figure out pretty quickly that the motives outsiders ascribe to us generally fail to connect with reality because their assumptions have one basic, fundamental flaw: They figure the process of newsgathering is somehow rational and deliberate.
